A new partnership in Malaysia is set to create a blockchain center in the area. WISeKey, a cybersecurity firm based in Switzerland, and the Malaysian tech holding Censof have joined forces to create a Blockchain Center of Excellence in the country, which would be used to create more use cases for Censof’s clients.

WISeKey is a company that is focused on cryptographic tools, identification, and authentication of Root of Trust, as well as blockchain and internet of things projects. The company is set to help others to open blockchain centers all around the world and has already affirmed that similar initiatives will be made in China, the United States, India, Africa, and Latin America.

Carlos Moreno, the Vice President of corporate alliances at WISeKey, has officially affirmed on the press release made by his company that the strategic partnership with the other companies will help both companies to combine their potential and to strengthen the work of both companies, WISeKey and Censof’s subsidiary in the country, Cendee.

Ameer bin Shaik Mydin, from the Censof board, has added that he sees big potential in the partnership and that the blockchain technology will help the clients of the companies to achieve more efficiency in the market.

For instance, one of the markets that the companies are very interested in is the market of cybersecurity against ransomware attacks, in particular, the WannaCry and NotPetya types, which are very popular at the moment.

In fact, WannaCry has infected many computers recently and most of them lacked even the most basic defenses in order to protect themselves from this type of attack, which creates a nice use case for cybersecurity companies that intend to help domestic users avoiding this type of hacker.

Brad Smith, président et chief legal officer de Microsoft a introduit mercredi formellement à Davos le TechAccord réunissant 79 signataires, parmi lesquels les grands noms mondiaux de la technologie. Lorsque Brad Smith, lançait en 2017 son projet de Conventions Numériques de Genève, pour assurer la paix dans le cyberespace, la réponse des gouvernements a été unanime: le secteur technologique devait être le premier à montrer l’exemple.

Dès lors, Brad Smith a mobilisé le secteur et a lancé un appel à San Francisco en 2018 pour convaincre au moins 20 entreprises. «Un chiffre inférieur aurait été embarrassant pour démarrer», selon lui.

Sous l’impulsion de Microsoft, WISeKey, entreprise genevoise de cybersécurité figure parmi les co-sponsors de cette initiative du TechAccord – qui continue son expansion mondiale – et qui rassemble des fournisseurs de technologies de premier plan, afin de définir des principes et des engagements communs en matière de cybersécurité.

Cette expansion globale permet de faire grandir la communauté des signataires du Cybersecurity Tech Accord en renforçant la dynamique auprès de nouveaux membres venus d’Argentine, de Bulgarie, du Chili, de République tchèque, d’Allemagne, du Luxembourg, des Pays-Bas, de Slovaquie et des États-Unis. En adhérant à l’accord, les signataires s’engagent à œuvrer sur quatre engagements-clés:

2. en ne commettant aucune action délictueuse à la faveur de gouvernements qui voudraient lancer des cyberattaques contre des citoyens et des entreprises innocents et en protégeant ceux-ci contre l’altération ou l’exploitation de produits et services malveillants durant toutes les étapes de leur développement, de leur conception et de leur distribution;
3. en accomplissant plus d’efforts pour responsabiliser les développeurs, les utilisateurs et les entreprises, qui exploitent le potentiel de la technologie, en les aidant à construire et renforcer leurs capacités de protection et
4. en s’appuyant sur les relations existantes et en entreprenant des actions collectives pour établir de nouveaux partenariats, formels et informels, avec des chercheurs issus de l’industrie, de la société civile et de la sécurité. L’objectif étant d’améliorer la collaboration technique, de coordonner la divulgation des vulnérabilités, de partager les menaces et de minimiser les risques d’introduction de codes malveillants dans le cyberespace.

Depuis la création du Cybersecurity Tech Accord, les signataires ont soutenu des initiatives concernant la sécurité des courriers électroniques et du routage, la mise en œuvre de l’authentification, la signalisation et la conformité des messages au niveau du domaine (DMARC) dans leurs propres opérations et ont participé à des actions globales avec des commentaires adressés au groupe de travail de haut niveau sur la coopération numérique des Nations Unies, et en soutenant sans réserve l’Appel de Paris pour la confiance et la sécurité dans le cyberespace.

Using its Identity Blockchain technology, WISeKey will generate a digital identity stored in WISeKey’s Blockchain for each plastic product manufactured by participating companies and link it with a secure form-factor embedded on the product using QR codes, NFC microchips (using a new U.S. patent. No. 7,898,422 for an anti-counterfeiting NFC device) or UHF RFID technologies.  Upon purchase of a product equipped with an embedded form-factor, the customer, using the Race for Water App installed on their phone, has the ability to scan it and get information about the product and its ecological impact if not properly recycled.

Each product has a unique digital identity, and can generate a certain amount of Plastic Tokens, a cryptocurrency developed by WISeCoin AG, a Special Purpose Vehicle created by WISeKey. The amount of Plastic Tokens will be proportional to and indicative of the recycling efforts made over the life of the scanned plastic product.  Furthermore, Plastic Tokens represent a ‘donation promise’ to the Race for Water Foundation.

Once a product is equipped with an embedded form-factor, every transaction is digitally signed using WISeKey’s Identity Blockchain and PKI technology, giving an accurate and immutable representation of the recycling efforts made by each and every participating company. These companies and their efforts to save/clean the environment will be entered into a master database managed by the Race for Water Foundation and will be ranked according to the volume of Plastic Tokens transactions generated by each one of them.

Additionally, Race for Water Foundation is cooperating with ETIA (Evaluation Technologique, Ingénierie et Applications), a French engineering group specialized in ecotechnologies, to process non-sorted plastic wastes and convert them into electricity. C’est l’une des personnalités les plus attendues de la première édition du Geneva blockchain annual congress, qui se tiendra le 21 janvier à Palexpo. Auteur traduit dans 25 langues, avec à son actif plusieurs bestseller mondiaux dont Wikinomics et plus récemment Blockchain revolution, Don Tapscott dirige actuellement le Blockchain research institute.

Basée à Toronto, l’organisation fédère 60 entreprises et 12 industries et affiche plus de 80 projets, menés pour certains en collaboration avec des autorités gouvernementales. Vous avez évoqué à plusieurs reprises l’avènement d’une nouvelle ère de l’internet. Qu’en est-il exactement?

Depuis 40 ans, on a développé l’internet de l’information, dont font également partie le 2.0 et les réseaux sociaux. Or ce que nous vivons actuellement est totalement différent et d’une toute autre ampleur, avec l’émergence de l’internet de la valeur. Transfert d’argent, émission et gestion d’actifs, de contrats, garantie de la propriété intellectuelle, vote, le tout appliqué à des domaines aussi divers que la finance, le juridique, ou la production artistique.

Toutes ces applications vont avoir un impact supérieur sur l’organisation des sociétés et des Etats que n’a eu l’internet de l’information depuis son apparition. Et le développement de la blockchain est directement liée à ce changement de paradigme.

De quelle manière?

L’internet de la valeur va nécessiter production, stockage et transaction de ces nouvelles applications. La blockchain permet de réaliser tout cela de manière sécurisée et privée, en pear to pear, sans l’intervention d’intermédiaires.

Elle résout notamment un problème technique central, celui dit de «la double-dépense», en assurant qu’une transaction -qu’elle concerne de la monnaie, un contrat, un titre- n’est effectuée qu’une et une seule fois. La construction de ce nouvel écosystème va redessiner la carte du monde, avec l’émergence des villes et régions leaders sur cette technologie structurante.

La Suisse est plutôt bien positionnée pour le moment…

Beaucoup de places se distinguent actuellement, on pense bien sûr à Toronto, New-york, Shangaï, Berlin… Effectivement, la Suisse fait pour l’instant partie de ces leaders, avec en particulier la Cryptovalley Zoug Zurich bien sûr. Genève à également une carte à jouer pour devenir un pôle mondial de la blockchain, si les autorités poursuivent l’effort entrepris dans la lignée de la FINMA pour clarifier le cadre réglementaire.

Les initiatives sont là. Wisekey est en train de bâtir un centre d’excellence dédié à la blockchain à Genève, qui pourrait avoir un impact décisif. Wisekey est membre du blockchain research institute et travaille à l’élaboration d’une plateforme globale pour le deuxième âge d’internet. Une plateforme qui permettrait le partage des savoirs et savoir-faire sur la question à travers le monde. D’autant plus que la force de la communauté blockchain genevoise et de son système universitaire sont des signes positifs. Tout comme la présence de grands organisations internationales, terrain favorable à l’implémentation de la technologie.

La chute du cours des cryptomonnaies entraine une crise de confiance auprès du grand public. Ne risque-t-elle pas d’impacter le développement et la crédibilité de projets blockchain?

C’est très bien qu’une correction ait lieu. Elle va permettre de s’orienter vers moins de spéculation et plus de valeur ajoutée réelle pour l’économie et la société. On se rend compte que la conjoncture n’a pas affecté l’enthousiasme des grands institutions financières. Un total d’un milliard a été investi cette année par plusieurs grandes banques, dont JP Morgan, Santander ou Bank of America.

Toutes les institutions peuvent être hackées, que ce soit JP Morgan ou la CIA, et elles sont conscientes que la blockchain est le système le plus sécure. Le bitcoin n’est pas l’enjeu, à part dans des pays monétairement plus instable où il peut servir de réserve de valeur. En revanche, en Suisse par exemple, la banque centrale a intérêt à développer un crypto-franc. Un tel outil lui permettrait de gérer sa politique monétaire de manière plus transparente et efficiente.

Si Genève a manqué la révolution du web – pourtant inventé au CERN par Tim Berners-Lee il y a 30 ans – celle du mobile – avec le départ du Salon Telecoms au profit du Mobile Word Congress à Barcelone – elle ne doit pas laisser passer cette chance ultime que représente la révolution blockchain. Quels sont les atouts de Genève face à cette «révolution» blockchain?

Genève possède le pétrole de l’économie digitale: les données. Elles sont stockées sur des serveurs en Suisse, conservées en silo et issues des organisations internationales, qui certes font la Genève internationale, mais appartiennent à la Genève analogue. Il n’y a aucun développement de la richesse digitale lié à leur présence, que je qualifierai même de stérile, du point de vue digital. La blockchain va leur fournir des outils leur permettant de décentraliser leurs données hautement stratégiques et d’en donner accès à la population mondiale.

Après avoir manqué la révolution du web, malgré son invention à Genève par Tim Berners-Lee, il y a 30 ans; celle du mobile au détriment de Barcelone et son Mobile World Congress (MWC); Genève, ville analogue, doit se positionner dans le digital et sortir l’huile, pour fabriquer l’essence. Ses atouts ne sont pas exploités par Genève, dont le sol regorge de puits de pétrole et que personne ne fait sortir, afin de les monétiser dans l’économie digitale.

N’oublions pas que la data est le pétrole pour l’intelligence artificielle, dont les algorithmes ont besoin pour fonctionner de façon efficiente. Avec de mauvaises données, de mauvais résultats.

Mais Genève n’est pas seule dans cette course ultra-compétitive de la blockchain.

En effet, mais elle possède un modèle unique: les données de toutes les agences onusiennes, les ONG, la Cnuced, l’OMC, l’OMPI, l’IUT, les sièges sociaux, le CERN, IATA, le WEF, le CICR. Certes des villes comme Washington ou Bruxelles, sont également riches en données, mais c’est une bonne nouvelle. Car plus la blockchain aura d’applications, mieux ce sera pour Genève. Pensez aux données dans le domaine de la santé avec les données mondiales de l’OMS; à l’aviation mondiale avec les données de IATA, aux transactions et accords commerciaux avec l’OMC, aux données du WEF, du CERN. Afin de continuer d’utiliser la métaphore des matières premières, Genève repose sur une mine d’or et personne ne s’y intéresse. Ces agences onusiennes travaillent en silo. Financées par les gouvernements, leur mission est justement de collecter puis transmettre les données à leurs membres.

Face aux géants de la technologie américaine (GAFA) et chinoise (BAIDU), l’Europe et donc la Suisse et Genève n’ont-elles pas une bataille de retard?

Les GAFA sont des géants car on les a laissés grandir. En Europe et à fortiori en Suisse, règne un cruel manque d’action, de vision et de connaissance dans le domaine, face aux GAFA, qui nous ont imposé leur modèle colonial. Aujourd’hui, l’Europe réagit au lieu d’agir pro-activement. Si s’opposer farouchement aux GAFA est un combat perdu pour l’Europe et la Suisse, développer un nouveau modèle de gouvernance dans l’économie digitale, basé sur la confiance – ce que permet justement la blockchain – est la position gagnante. J’ai beaucoup d’espoir et la blockchain va amoindrir ce système centralisé, voire centralisateur des GAFA. Vous voyez beaucoup de projets blockchain développés par Facebook ou Amazon? Non, c’est justement la technologie anti-GAFA par excellence.

Zoug a pris de l’avance comme pôle de référence mondial dans les crypto-monnaies. Comment Genève peut-elle devenir un hub international de la blockchain?

Un énorme travail a été fait par Zoug et son pôle d’excellence. Le Canton a compris et adapté sa législation en conséquence. Il est notamment possible de payer en bitcoin. Le succès international de Zoug inspire Genève, qui commence à faire la même chose, mais dans la blockchain. Trop nombreux sont les gens, y compris au sein du département de la promotion économique, à faire encore l’amalgame entre crypto-monnaies et blockchain. Zoug conserve la partie spéculative et Genève doit réussir son positionnement dans la blockchain, en tant que plateforme d’application, selon un modèle de confiance. C’est dans son ADN avec la banque privée depuis des décennies. Il est temps de passer d’une ville analogue à une ville digitale de confiance.

Quel est le budget d’investissement de Wisekey dans ce projet de hub blockchain?

En vendant pour 45 millions de dollars une technologie qui intéressait les Américains, nous pouvons alors dégager cette somme substantielle dans le projet de hub mondial blockchain. Vous savez, si ma société était cotée au Nasdaq, elle serait valorisée 10 fois son chiffre d’affaires et non 2,5 fois comme c’est le cas sur le marché suisse. Mais il faut bien commencer par quelque chose et j’ai grand espoir pour Genève, même si la Suisse manque de late stage financing et que la BNS investit dans les GAFA et non dans les start-up suisses. L’investissement que Wisekey dédie à ce projet passe aussi par l’ouverture de mon carnet d’adresses. J’ai rencontré Don Tapscott à Davos il y a 3 ans. Il est actif dans mon comité stratégique depuis. Il sera le keynote speaker du Geneva Annual Blockchain Congress lundi, avant de partir pour le WEF où Wisekey organise un panel, en présence de Brad Smith, président et avocat général de Microsoft, que je connais depuis 25 ans et qui plaide pour une «convention de Genève numérique.»

Que manque-t-il à ce stade pour réussir un tel pari?

Une vision laser et non rainbow. A l’instar du fameux slogan Make America Great, je dirais Geneva First Digital. On ne se remet pas assez en question ici. Nous pouvons réussir à instaurer un modèle de gouvernance humaine, fiable, de confiance, reposant sur la blockchain et non sur un système centralisateur, de perte d’identité digitale comme le système mondial dominé par la Silicon Valley. Genève peut devenir la capitale de la 4ème révolution industrielle. Imaginez le destin du monde si Tim Bernes-Lee, qui sera présent à Davos dans notre panel d’ailleurs, avait réussi à convaincre les autorités à l’époque de garder la souveraineté d’internet à Genève. Il manquait alors une vision politique et Tim est parti au MIT, qui a immédiatement vu le potentiel en lui offrant les bases de développement de son consortium W3C.

Genève possède toute la légitimité. Hurry-up!

SuisseLa technologie de la chaîne de blocs (blockchain) qui conserve en sécurité les transactions des cryptomonnaies est discutée à Genève dès ce lundi.

La blockchain, cette nouvelle technologie de stockage d’informations fonctionnant sans organe de contrôle, est aussi un «modèle anti-Gafa», estiment ses promoteurs, en référence aux géants du net (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple) qui exploitent à leur profit les milliards de données que leur confient les citoyens. Cette question, notamment, fait partie des discussions soulevées par le 1er Congrès annuel sur la blockchain organisé lundi à Genève.«Nous avons à Genève de solides atouts pour nous profiler dans la révolution en cours représentée par la blockchain», estime Carlos Moreira, fondateur et directeur de l’entreprise de cybersécurité Wisekey, un des principaux intervenants du congrès, interrogé par AWP en marge de la manifestation.

«La blockchain (ou chaîne de blocs) commence à devenir concrète. Nous sommes assis sur un puits de pétrole. Un immense savoir-faire est disponible, pas encore exploité. Genève doit se profiler pour capitaliser là-dessus », plaide M. Moreira, rappelant au passage que l’aventure d’internet est partie du Cern à Meyrin, avant que les Etats-Unis s’en emparent. «Pour la blockchain, à l’Europe de reprendre la main», dit-il.

Le patron de Wisekey est convaincu que la phase spéculative sur les cryptomonnaies – qui s’appuient sur la blockchain – est aujourd’hui largement passée pour laisser la place à de nouvelles monnaies ou jetons numériques basés sur des vrais projets industriels.

Il cite l’exemple des contrefaçons – de l’horlogerie aux médicaments. La technologie des registres distribués («ledgers»), telle la blockchain, permet de retracer tout l’historique d’un produit et de vérifier son authenticité. Grâce à l’interaction des microprocesseurs intégrés dans les objets mis en relation, il devient par exemple possible de contrôler l’origine et l’authenticité d’une montre via son téléphone portable.

Addiction aux données

Les Gafa ont créé des «comportements addictifs» sur lesquels ils font de l’argent, à l’image des cigarettiers, illustre Carlos Moreira. Mais aujourd’hui, investisseurs, politiques et citoyens opèrent selon lui une prise de conscience. La blockchain, sorte «d’anti-Gafa» à ses yeux, a le potentiel pour répondre à ces nouvelles demandes. Elle permet aux consommateurs de se réapproprier leurs données et leur identité numérique, via le gigantesque répertoire que constitue cette technologie.

«Avec les médias sociaux, les utilisateurs sont en quelque sorte des produits. Aujourd’hui, 90% des données recueillies par les géants de l’internet sont monétisées – via par exemple la publicité ciblée – aux Etats-Unis», observe M. Moreira. La blockchain doit permettre non seulement de protéger les identités de la personne mais aussi de donner à chaque citoyen la possibilité de valoriser ses données et d’effectuer des transactions validées de gré à gré, sans intermédiaire. «Autrement dit, de créer un nouvel écosystème basé sur le consentement», explique-t-il.

L’enjeu est de bien se positionner par rapport à ce nouveau paradigme. «Genève possède à cet égard des avantages formidables, grâce aux innombrables données conservées par les grands organismes internationaux qu’elle héberge comme l’Iata (aviation), l’OMS (santé) ou le BIT (travail)», explique M. Moreira. Sa culture bancaire constitue aussi un actif à valoriser.

«Nous en sommes aujourd’hui encore à l’ère de l’analogique, mais tout va très vite», relève M. Moreira. «La blockchain deviendra grand public lorsque des milliards d’objets auront été identifiés et connectés dans l’internet. D’ici dix ans, la société sera numérique à 80%», conclut le patron de Wisekey.

Each Blockchain Center of Excellence is expected to develop a particular expertise that can be shared among all centers. For example, the Blockchain Center of Excellence in Buenos Aires will spearhead the development of particular platforms and applications to fight counterfeiting, illicit trade and corruption, while the Geneva Blockchain Center of Excellence will focus on Fintech, particularly digital private banking and commodity trading applications.

Swiss-based WISeKey is releasing a blockchain-based smartphone that will integrate a proprietary digital asset wallet.

WISeKey International Holding, a Swiss-based cybersecurity and IoT company, announced on Thursday the release of WISePhone, a blockchain-based smartphone that has its components protected by WISeKey’s advanced technological solutions. The company is authorized as a Telecommunication Services Provider under the Swiss Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM), giving it rights to offer the smartphone voice encryption solutions that are integrated into WISePhone. So far, the company has not announced the price of its phone, but it can it can be pre-ordered online.

The new phone will integrate WISeKey’s hardware and software solutions, including WISeCoin technology. The latter is a recently launched blockchain platform that allows government entities to deploy their own crypto-coins. Also, WISePhone will include a proprietary wallet that will become active after WISeCoin AG, the subsidiary of WISeKey and the operator of the WISeCoin platform, gets the green light from the Swiss financial market regulator (FINMA) to conduct a security token offering (STO) event.

WISePhone’s wallet has a Hardware Security Module (HSM) device and integrates WISeKey SuisseID Digital Identity technology, which permits cloud-powered qualified signing functionalities endorsed by the Swiss Government and in line with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The wallet is compatible with most major blockchain networks, as it uses WISeKey’s Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) solution to execute payments.

Also, the phone’s apps provide encrypted communication capabilities through WISeTalk.

Technology will define us, instead of the other way around, if we allow fragmented innovation and adoption. That’s not to say we advocate a universal system of laws to constrain us.
